Following recent studies in symbolism and ecology, this ethnography of the Arawak-speaking Yukuna of the Colombian Amazon explores shamanic models for the regulation of human relations to the environment. Through detailed consideration of qualitative (mythic) and quantitative (statistical) aspects of different subsistence activities, author demonstrates both the symbolic and pragmatic construction of Yukuna environmental management, as well as historical influences on native models –Handbook of Latin American Studies, v. 57.
