Engineer Wolf and his helper, mechanic Lazuli, build a time machine with which Wolf pretends to escape from all the mistakes and obsessions that haunt him by returning to his childhood. Hes convinced that only by avoiding such shadows will he be able to enjoy the brief moments of happiness that life offers him. But Inquisitors will rarely accept such daring, and it will be difficult for Wolf to prevail upon them. This is Vians most intimate and least mocking novel, probably the most autobiographical too. Despite the tenderness of the story, both painful and pathetic, he cant refrain from adding the elements of fantasy and the lucid insolence that became trademarks of his writing and give his characters and stories a magical and expansive vitality.
