Contrary to common belief, fiction occurs not when the first person lies, but when others, aware of the lie, choose to ignore it. Since our brain basically employs the same mechanisms when dealing with reality or when creating or understanding fiction, we can conclude that fiction has existed since the first Homo sapiens walked the Earth. This illuminating essay stems from a central hypothesis which states that if fiction is such a powerful tool in the exploration of nature, then, fiction is reality.
