Thirty years since the publication of his last novel, James Salter sets this one in the golden years after World War II. After returning from Okinawa, Philip Bowman goes to Harvard and, upon graduation, gets a job with a small renowned publishing company in New York City. Living the high life, filled with intellectuals, cocktail parties, and women, Bowman cannot seem to find true love. When he finally finds a woman who captivates him, he is taken down a road he thought he would never travel.
